AR VR Lab for Schools in India: Space, Equipment and Setup

If you have started looking into an AR VR lab for your school, you have probably noticed something frustrating.
Almost every page explains why immersive learning is the future. Very few answer the questions you actually have to answer in front of your management committee.
How much floor space does it need? What goes into the room? How do you get forty students through it in one period? And how long before it is actually running?
This guide covers those, in the order a school usually meets them.

What an AR VR lab actually is
The term covers two technologies that are usually sold together.
Virtual reality puts the student inside a simulated environment using a headset. In schools this is almost always a standalone headset — no PC, no wires, no sensors mounted on the wall. This is where science practicals and 3D structures live.
Augmented reality places digital objects into the real room, usually through a tablet. A student points a tablet at a marker and a heart appears on the desk in front of them.
Most Indian school installations are VR-led, with AR added on tablets later. VR is where the curriculum-mapped content sits, and it is the part that replaces something a school is already trying to do.
Space: what the room needs
This is the first constraint, and it decides whether the project is possible in your building at all.

Storage | A lockable charging cabinet. This matters more than schools expect — it is what keeps the lab working in year three. |
An existing computer lab or a spare classroom is usually the easiest conversion. You do not need a purpose-built room.
Three room mistakes worth avoiding
A room you have to walk through. If it is a corridor to somewhere else, sessions get interrupted and students in headsets get bumped.
A room on the far side of the campus. Every minute of walking is a minute out of the period. Labs placed near the science block get used; labs placed near the store room quietly do not.
A room you share with another activity. If the furniture has to be moved back and forth each time, the lab stops being used within a term.

Two of those lines deserve more attention than the rest.
The content licence
Hardware without curriculum-mapped content becomes a demo room. It gets shown to visitors, and within a term it stops appearing on the timetable.
So ask what the content is mapped to, and ask to see the mapping. A vendor should be able to show you which experiment covers which chapter, not just a total number. Ours are listed openly — you can see the full Class 10 practical list here, chapter by chapter.
Controllers, or no controllers
This is the quiet decision buried in the equipment list, and it shapes everything after it.
If each headset ships with two handheld controllers, your device count triples. So does the number of things to charge, pair and replace. If students use their own hands instead, it is one device each and nothing to lose.

Running forty students through the lab
This is the question that decides whether the lab succeeds, and it is almost never in the brochure.
A typical Indian secondary section is 35–45 students. A practical period is 40 minutes. Nobody buys forty headsets. So the real question is how you fit a full section into a period without half the class sitting idle.
The arrangement that works in most schools is a straightforward split:

Two things make this work. First, the desk half needs real work to do, not waiting — writing up predictions before going in is more useful than writing up observations afterwards. Second, the changeover has to be fast. If students have to be handed and shown equipment each time, you lose five minutes twice.
Fifteen to twenty headsets covers a section of forty comfortably on this pattern. Going to thirty headsets buys you speed, not capability.
The stage most schools underestimate is not installation. It is week five, once the novelty has passed and the lab has to earn its place on a timetable that was already full. How long setup takes
Assuming the room already exists and needs no construction:

Realistically, four to six weeks from purchase order to first lesson. Schools that start during the summer break are usually teaching with it by the second or third week of term.
Train at least two teachers. A lab that depends on one enthusiastic person stops being used the term that person changes schools.
Seven questions to ask any vendor
Is your content mapped to NCERT chapter by chapter, or is it a general library? Ask to see the mapping document.
How many experiments, and for which classes? A number without a class range is not an answer.
Can I see the teacher dashboard, live? If it cannot be shown in a demo, it may not exist yet.
Do students need controllers? If yes, ask how many an average school replaces in a year.
How would a section of forty run this in one period? Ask them to walk you through the timing.
What happens when a headset fails in year two? Get warranty terms and turnaround time in writing.
Will you demo in our room, with our students, during a normal period? An exhibition-hall demo tells you nothing about your building.

Does the lab need internet to work?
Wi-Fi is needed for content updates and for the teacher dashboard, but the experiments themselves usually run offline from the headset. A lab will keep working through a connection drop mid-lesson.
Where to start
The sequence that wastes the least time: confirm you have a suitable room, decide whether you want controllers or hand tracking, then ask two or three vendors for a demo in your own building.
The demo is the part worth protecting. A lab that looks impressive in a conference hall and a lab that works in a forty-minute period with forty students are not the same thing — and only one of them is what you are buying.
